Teaching Kitchens

Interior Architecture
Project Overview
The brief required that my chosen building must contain accommodation for 10, a shop, a restaurant, a teaching kitchen, library/workspace, and student kitchens that could accommodate 30 people. I decided to draw upon my African upbringing and based my project on a fictional South African chef.
Existing Building
The building I chose is in Dublin’s city centre. It is currently a gourmet food store cum restaurant and made for a great precedence study. The building was previously a telephone exchange but had become vacant. I met with the shop owners to see how they worked around the steel structure needed for the telephone exchange.
My concept was derived from Ndebele art (Ndebele being a South African tribe). I did this because despite Ndebele art being very geometric, the free-hand nature makes it feel more earthy and less formal than paintings by the likes of Mondrian. I then toned down the design to its bare triangular form and extruded it up. This gave me the idea of creating a central atrium that would reach the entire height of the building. The atrium could then be used as circulation space on each level through a series for bridges that mimicked the African pattern while allowing for spectacular views of the entire building and its various functions.
